Golf can be a really tough sport. You have to have a lot of skill and coordination to be good at it. But even the best golfers can have a bad day on the course.
The PGA Championship is one of the biggest tournaments in golf, and there are sure to be some great shots and even better fails. Looking at some of the worst golf shots captured on video can give you a good laugh and make you feel better about your own game.
I have stopped counting how many times I have shanked a golf ball. It seems like it happens to me at least once a week. I’m sure there are some people out there who can relate.
A shank is when the ball hits the club in an off-center way, typically resulting in the ball going significantly off course. This could lead to a score of several more strokes than you originally intended.
Imagine hitting the driver off the tee only to see the ball go straight into the water. Rory McIlroy happened to do this at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. He was trying to clear the water hazard, but his ball went way left and right into the drink.
Have you ever been in a position chipping onto the green only a few yards away from the hole and the golf ball barely moved? This happened to Miguel Ángel Jiménez at Ras Al Khalmah Championship presented by Pheonix Capital. He duffed his chip shot, and the ball rolled just a few feet.
What about those dreaded three puts? We’ve all been there, missing the green and then having to putt from off the green. This can happen whether you are a beginner or a professional. Ryan Fox was unlucky at the Ras al Khaimah Classic. He missed a putt that was only two feet away from the hole.
The bunker shots are my specialty. I can never seem to get out of the sand in one shot. At the Ras al Khaimah Classic, James Morrison cut it thin, ball first and way over the hole.
How about par 3’s? Sepp Straka has miscalculated his first shot at WGC – Dell Technologies Match Play. The ball went out of the bounds and his 3rd shot ended up on the green but rolled off to out of bounds too.
The flop shots are one of my favourite trick shots. But they don’t always work as planned. They are difficult to execute, especially when in deeper rough. At the Magical Kenya Open presented by Absa, Matthias Schmid tried a flop shot from a difficult lie that did not travel far.
Golf can be a really tough sport, but it’s also really fun. These pro golfers make it look easy, but even they have their fair share of bad days on the course. So if you’re having a tough day out there, just remember that even the pros make mistakes. And if you’re really struggling, just take a break and have a laugh at some of these videos. You’ll feel better in no time.
