TaylorMade SIM2 Max Driver Review

SIM2 Max Driver Head

The TaylorMade Golf Company was founded by Gary Adams in 1979, and it is currently a subsidiary of Centroid Investment Partners after it was purchased from KPS Capital Partners in May 2021.

The company specializes in the production of golf equipment and accessories, and it offers a wide range of products for both amateur and professional golfers.

TaylorMade’s golf clubs are currently used by some high-profile golfers, including Dustin Johnson, Matthew Wolff, Rickie Fowler, Tiger Woods, and Collin Morikawa.

The SIM2 Max driver has been released in three different versions which we’ll discuss in detail below.  All three drivers are available in 9.5°, 10.5° and 12° loft options.

I tested the SIM 2 Max Driver in 12° with a Ventus 5-R Fujikura shaft, and I was very impressed with the performance.

The driver has a nice, solid feel at impact, and it generates a good amount of ball speed.

The forgiveness is excellent, and I didn’t notice any significant drop-off in performance on mis-hits.

The Technologies that Make It so Forgiving

So why does the TaylorMade SIM2 Max driver perform so well?

A lot of it has to do with the innovative technologies that TaylorMade has incorporated into the design.

SIM2 Max Driver

Forged Ring Construction

The Forged Ring Construction is an absolute game changer. Here’s what TaylorMade said about this incredible technology.

“Forged Ring Construction is the key to unlocking a new dimension of distance and optimal forgiveness with SIM2 Max Driver. Crafted from a lightweight and high strength aluminum that’s precision milled, it unites the critical components of the driver head into a singular force.”

It’s forged from a single piece of aluminum to join the face, body and sole of the club together. This creates a more rigid perimeter around the face making it much more forgiving on off-center hits. It also helps to increase ball speed for more distance and reduce unnecessary spin.

Sim Inertia Generator

Another feature that makes this driver so great is the SIM Inertia Generator.

“The asymmetric Inertia Generator is designed to provide faster club head speed through advanced geometry and aerodynamic analytics. A full lightweight carbon sole enables the redistribution of mass for a deeper CG and enhanced forgiveness.”

This heavy tungsten weight is positioned low and deep in the head which increases MOI without sacrificing swing weight.

It also helps keep the driver stable through impact for better accuracy off the tee.

Speed Injected Twist Face

The Face of Speed & Forgiveness is a new technology that is designed to help golfers find more fairways.

It is a thin, light and flexible face insert that is made from CNC milled titanium.

The face wrap extends around the perimeter of the face, and it helps to increase ball speed and forgiveness on off-center hits.

Thru-Slot Speed Pocket

Speed is everything when it comes to hitting longer drives.

The Thru-Speed Pocket technology will help increase ball speed and launch angle, even if you hit it low on the face. Your thin drives are about to get a lot longer!

It also promotes more forgiveness by allowing the face to flex and rebound at impact.

Split Mass Weighting

The Split Mass Weighting is another new technology that is designed to promote enhanced forgiveness and spin properties.

The weight is split between the heel and toe, and it helps to keep the CG low and deep in the head.

This results in more forgiveness on mis-hits, and it also promotes a higher launch angle and spin rate.

Three Driver Head Options

It’s essential to find a driver that is right for your swing speed and ideal launch/spin to maximize distance. TaylorMade makes this easier as they offer three heads for different speeds and types of golfers.

TaylorMade SIM 2

This is the lowest spinning of the SIM 2 drivers and has a low launch. Here’s how TaylorMade described the low-spin model.

“The reconstructed SIM2 delivers high MOI with a heavy 16g steel weight positioned on the Inertia Generator. The TPS Front Weight is strategically located to encourage optimal launch with low spin properties.”

TaylorMade SIM 2 Max

The SIM2 Max driver is a more forgiving option that is a mid-launch club and higher MOI.

This model has a 24-gram tungsten weight that is positioned in the front for optimal launch and spin. This will help you launch it higher and also improve forgiveness.

For the average swing speed golfer, this is the best option.

TaylorMade SIM 2 Max-D

The final choice is the TaylorMade SIM 2 Max-D which has a built-in draw bias to help you find more fairways. But it’s not like most “anti-slice” drivers that sacrifice forgiveness.

Here’s how TaylorMade described this model:

“The reconstructed SIM2 Max•D features a repositioned Inertia Generator that’s closer to the heel, encouraging a heel CG that’s low and back for more forgiveness. The end result, a draw-biased driver without compromise.”

It also comes with a lightweight shaft that will make it easier to swing faster. This is usually the best option for senior golfers who want as much speed as possible.

My Experience Using It on The Course

The Taylormade SIM2 Max is one of the best drivers that I have ever used; it is incredibly forgiving, and it generates a good amount of ball speed. The workability is decent and it performs well on both off-center and mishits.

SIM2 Max Driver Ventus 5-R Fujikura Shaft

The driver looks great behind the ball, and it has a nice, solid feel at impact. Since I was using a 12-degree lofted driver, my trajectory was a little higher than usual but that didn’t affect the distance too much.

I have also noticed that my accuracy has slightly improved and I was hitting more fairways too.

Pros
  • Excellent forgiveness on mis-hits
  • Good ball speed and launch angle
  • Looks great behind the ball
  • Nice solid feel at impact
  • Increased accuracy and more fairways hit
  • Cheaper than the latest TaylorMade Stealth Driver
Cons
  • Not as adjustable as some other drivers
  • Loud sound at impact
  • There is no 12 degree option for left-handed golfers

Alternative Recommended Drivers

TaylorMade Stealth

The new TaylorMade Stealth driver is the latest and hottest driver from the company. It is a very forgiving driver that is designed for golfers of all abilities with three club head options.

The biggest difference between this driver and others is the Carbon design (as they like to call it, the “Carbonwood Age.”) The price tag is a little high, but it is definitely worth the investment.
