PXG 0211 vs PXG 0311 Gen 5 Driver Review

You are in the market for a new PXG driver and you have already decided that you do not want to pay a premium price for the newest thing out there.

After thorough research, you have decided that you want to try a PXG driver and are between the 0211 and the 0311 Gen 5.

I have had the opportunity to test both of these heads so I can guide you through their different intricacies to help make the decision easier on which one to go with.

The 0211 is the driver for players that are on a tight budget but still want exceptional speed and distance. The 0311 Gen 5 is perfect for the player that is looking for a nice blend of distance and forgiveness while still not breaking the bank.

In this article, I will talk about my experience with these drivers in regards to sound and feel, forgiveness, and distance.

I will also cover real life numbers and finally give my recommendation.

The PXG 0311 Gen 5 driver entered the market in 2022 and swiftly gained a reputation as one of the most sought-after drivers available.

According to GolfWRX.com, it ranked as the finest PXG driver they had ever tested at that point. Meanwhile, Golfweek praised its suitability for golfers craving distance and enhanced ball speed.

Sounds, Look, and Feel

PXG 0311 GEN5 Driver

Both of these drivers have a very traditional look at setup. The 0211 features a black crown where the 0311 Gen 5 features a gray crown with black perimeter.

I am a big traditionalist when it comes to driver setup and both of these heads sit great on the ground and neither one of them looked open or closed at address.

The sound and feel of both drivers were also great. The mass of both drivers is positioned low and back to create high-frequency vibrations to aid in sound.

I found that this made them both sound very solid with a mid-pitch crack.  The feel was also very similar to other PXG clubs I’ve tested. Both felt extremely solid and gave great feedback on misshits.

I would give this category a tie.

Forgiveness

The PXG 0211 driver uses robotic polishing along with low and rear weighting to increase forgiveness. The robotic polishing ensures the face has proper curvature which helps to turn heel and toe balls into fairway finders. The weight low and back increases MOI which increases forgiveness.

The 0311 Gen 5 driver also incorporates robotic polishing on the face to ensure proper face curvature. In addition to that it employs a carbon fiber crown and extensive interchangeable perimeter weighting to increase stability and MOI.

This driver is one of the straightest on the market and if you’ve see the PXG 0311 Gen 6, it is the straightest on the market.

After testing both myself, mishits stayed in play better with the 0311 Gen 5 so it wins this category.

Distance

The 2022 version of the 0211 driver is much improved when it comes to distance than its 2021 0211 counterpart.  In testing it featured higher ball speed, lower spin, and more distance over the previous model.

It features a high speed face made form Ti412 titanium alloy that generates significant face deflection and ultra-fast ball speeds.

The 0311 Gen 5 driver also features several key elements to promote distance. It too features a high speed face made from Ti412 titanium alloy. This paired with a deep low spin head helps players keep spin down, launch down, and hit bombs.

I personally liked the deepness of the face with the 0311 Gen 5 as it helped me to create a lower spin ball flight which resulted in slightly longer drives.

Real Life Numbers

After doing research I found Dean Macko Golf on YouTube who did some testing on his monitor.  I have listed the numbers below and you can also CLICK HERE to view them yourself.

Recommendation

After testing these two drivers myself and doing my own research, I have to say, for a discount head that is the 0211, it isn’t far behind the premium 0311.

I felt that when it came to look, sound, and feel both heads gave me an incredible premium sound / feel while still keeping a classic traditional look which I really liked.

The forgiveness is really where I think the 0311 Gen 5 driver sets itself apart from the 0211. The carbon fiber crown allowed PXG to add more weight around the perimeter of the face to increase MOI and make the head more stable through the strike.  I also really like the customizable perimeter weighting that you can move around to change ball flight and swing weight.

For me, the 0311 also took the edge in the distance category as the 0211 felt a slightly spinny and floaty at times. The deep high speed face paired with its lower launch and lower spin characteristics really made it stand out to me.

Currently the 0211 driver comes in at $199.99 which is an absolute steal.  If you are looking for a really solid driver and need a little more spin and higher launch, this 0211 would be a great fit.

The 0311 Gen 5 driver comes in at $289.99 which even though more than the 0211, still a great price.

It is for the player looking to get more customization, forgiveness, and distance out of their driver while keeping ball flight and spin low.

If I were to buy one of these drivers today, I would go with the 0311 Gen 5 simply because you get added technology and still get a bargain price.
