Early life

As you can guess, with a name like Viktor Hovland, this professional golfer wasn’t originally from the United States.

In fact, Viktor was born on the 18th of September 1997 in Oslo, Norway. Viktor has brown hair and hazel eyes. He currently weighs around 165 lb (75 kg) and stands at 5 ft 10 in (178 cm).

Unfortunately, due to his reluctance to share anything online, all we know is that he seems to be the only son of Galina and Harald Hovland.

His parents moved to the United States to live in Oklahoma when he was still young. His father worked as an engineer in a private company while his mother cared for their household.

Viktor’s passion for golf started when he was 11 years old after his father introduced him to the game.

As he grew up, his passion took a more solid form, and he began to play in various championships. For example, the 2013 Europeans Boys Team Championships in Scotland was among his first games.

This was a fantastic feat, as he was the first Norwegian player to do so. Furthermore, during the same year, Viktor played as an amateur in the 2018 Emirates Australian Open and finished with a tie for 13th place.

He also earned invitations to the 2019 U.S. Open, the 2019  Masters Tournament, and the 2019 Open Championships.

When the 2019 season rolled around, Viktor competed in the Masters Tournament, finishing with a rare three under par and tying for 32nd place. As a result, he rose to number one on the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

This record-breaking score took the golfing world storm, as it was two points lower than Jack Niklaus’ 1960 mark.

He was also the first player to finish as a low amateur at the U.S. Open and the Masters Tournament in the same season since Matt Kucher in 1998.

During that same year, Viktor was awarded the Ben Hogan Award for being the best college player in the United States.

Right after Viktor set the new score for the U.S. Open, he turned professional at the Travelers Championship.

At the time, he was the only rookie to win on Tour during the season! Viktor also became the first player on the PGA since 1983 to record a streak of at least 18 rounds in the 60s at the CJ Cup.
