It’s every golfer’s dream — and high school senior Owen McCall lived it in the most unforgettable way imaginable.
On October 9, 2024, with the sun setting on his four-year high school golf career, McCall stepped onto the ninth tee at Marshfield Country Club and hit a shot that will be talked about for years. One swing. One ball. One hole-in-one — on his final shot as a Marshfield Ram.
Senior Day, Perfectly Scripted
The setting was already emotional: a Patriot League match against Hanover, held on Senior Day at Marshfield Country Club. McCall’s family and friends lined the green, a rare sight in high school golf, making the moment feel more like a movie than a match.
According to Golfweek’s original report, the entire scene played out like something out of a sports fairytale.
And maybe that’s why he was nervous.
“I wanted to make sure I didn’t go long because that’s where everyone was standing,” McCall later said, acknowledging the pressure of having the crowd so close. “I was rethinking about using my nine iron at the last minute after seeing the person in front of me hit an eight iron, but I went with the nine.”
One Last Shot — and It Was Perfect
Standing on the ninth tee, McCall wasn’t thinking about heroics or history. Just survival.
“What I was thinking about when I was teeing up was the same thing I was thinking on the first hole. Don’t mess up. Don’t do anything too awful,” he admitted.
He made contact — decent, but not perfect. At least, that’s what he thought. “When I hit it I thought it might be a little thin and I remember saying ‘Get legs!’” McCall recalled.
He couldn’t see the flag. The crowd could.
Within seconds, the course erupted.
“I heard it land and when it landed everyone’s hands went up until a half-a-second or second later when everyone exploded,” he said.
He’d done it — a hole-in-one. On Senior Day. On his final high school swing. His first ace ever.
“Just One of the Best Feelings”
His mother, Joanne McCall, was right by the green. “Just to see Owen have that moment, golfing for four years in high school being dedicated to the sport… Seeing his reaction is one of the best feelings you can have as a mom,” she said.
Even Coach Matt Murphy, a veteran of many seasons, was floored. “It hit about five feet left of the hole and rolled straight in. It was amazing to see,” he shared.
Murphy had seen something like it before — about ten years ago, on the same hole, by a student from Brockton High. But this one hit different.
A Finish Fit for a Champion
The shot didn’t just seal an emotional legacy — it helped Marshfield beat Hanover 219–231. A cherry on top for McCall, who had served as team captain during his final two seasons.
“I’ve had a ton of fun doing it,” he said. “It’s been great playing with those guys from my whole high school career and finishing my last shot as a Ram with a hole in one in that setting. It just does not feel real.”
Coach Murphy echoed that sentiment: “Owen was a great captain for us this year and just a really nice kid. He was great at bringing everyone together.”
The moment was made even more magical by pure luck — the Marshfield Student Broadcasting team was filming. McCall’s perfect final swing is now immortalized in high-definition glory.
Some Endings Write Themselves
“It’s still hard to believe that I hit my first hole-in-one on my final high school shot,” McCall said. “It’s a storybook ending.”
And he’s not wrong. It’s the kind of story that reminds you why we love sports — not just for the competition, but for moments like these. Moments when the ball drops, the crowd roars, and time stands still.
