“He Never Looks Rattled”: How Viktor Hovland Learned to Stay Cool by Watching Scottie Scheffler

“It’s freaking nerve-racking.”

That’s how Viktor Hovland summed up the final moments of the 2022 Hero World Challenge — a tournament he won, but only after holding off a late charge from Scottie Scheffler, who, in typical Scottie fashion, didn’t show an ounce of stress the entire round.

“He never looked rattled,” Hovland said. “Plays with ease. Never looks frustrated.”

For a guy who was feeling the pressure himself, watching someone so outwardly composed was both impressive and—if we’re honest—a little unsettling.

But it also taught him something.

Learning to Reset

Fast forward to the 2024 U.S. Open at Oakmont. Hovland found himself in a group with Scheffler again, and this time, the stakes were even higher — and so was the stress.

The pace was brutal. At one point, it took them 71 minutes to get through three holes. Most players would’ve been climbing the walls. But not Scheffler.

“When I’ve had a couple bad holes back-to-back, I tend to rush,” Hovland admitted. “Scottie’s calmness forces you to reset — he never lets the moment fluster him.”

That kind of unshakable focus isn’t just a personality quirk. It’s a competitive weapon.

And for Hovland, it became something worth studying.

The Scheffler Effect

Golfers talk about tempo all the time — but that usually means swing rhythm, not mental pace.

Scheffler’s mental tempo? Always steady.

Even when chasing a lead. Even when staring down a must-make putt. Even when you’d swear the pressure should be getting to him.

In fact, at the 2025 Valspar Championship, Hovland found himself tapping into the same mindset during a tense Sunday finish.

“I still just felt calm and wasn’t stressing even though I knew I had to make that putt on 14,” he said.

That wasn’t accidental. That was Scheffler rubbing off on him.

Calm Under Fire

If you’ve followed Hovland’s career, you know he’s not short on firepower. He can go low, get hot with the irons, and bury a streak of birdies like it’s nothing.

But mental toughness? That’s been more of a work in progress.

Scheffler, by contrast, has made a career out of playing what Hovland called “patient, mistake-free golf.” Not flashy — just relentlessly efficient.

“Seeing how Scottie plots his way around courses — with mental toughness — has taught me patience on the green,” Hovland explained.

In other words: It’s not about how flashy you are. It’s about how steady you can be when everything around you feels like chaos.

Mutual Respect

This isn’t just one pro tipping his cap to another. There’s real admiration between the two — and, more importantly, learning.

Hovland often talks about how Scheffler “wears people down.” Not by overpowering them. Not by out-swinging them. But by staying unbothered for 72 straight holes.

His demeanor. His mental approach. His ability to stay locked in and composed, no matter what.

That’s the part people don’t always see — and the part Hovland says separates him more than fans realize.

“When Scottie’s locked in,” he said, “you better have your best stuff. Because he won’t flinch.”

Pressure as a Teacher

Golf’s funny. One guy’s calm can actually make you feel more nervous if you’re struggling to hold it together.

But for Hovland, playing alongside Scheffler turned into a mirror.

It showed him what not rushing looks like. What real course management sounds like. What it means to not panic when the round gets messy.

And slowly but surely, it changed the way he approached his own game.

There’s no drill for this kind of lesson. No swing tip. No gear hack. Just real-time, high-stakes observation — and the humility to learn from the guy walking next to you.

“Scottie’s calmness forces you to reset — he never lets the moment fluster him.” — Viktor Hovland
